Revelstoke's Early Learning Program - one of only a few in the province - is getting under way.

"A few things make it unique," says Program Coordinator Betty Switzer. "It's fully funded by the Ministry of Education, its for children between the ages of three and... parents are actively involved."

Switzer told the trustees of School District 19 last Tuesday that the free program would use art, music, songs, stories and creative play opportunities to prepare very young children for formal education in the city's elementary schools.

District Superintendent Anne Cooper said the district has an excellent reputation when it comes to elementary education and the district has "done everything necessary to get the program this far."

This program is true partnership involving the district, Revelstoke Child Care Resource and Referral, the Interior Health Authority's Public Health Program, Interior Health Speech and Language specialists, Infant Development, Community Connections, Revelstoke Family Literacy and Mother Goose.

The program will be conducted at Mountain View Elementary. Participating families can choose to send their children on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. until noon or on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Nutritious snacks will be provided to all children.
