Liberal Child Care Plan Gets Board Support

School District 57 will be sending a letter to the Stephen Harper government asking that it honour the commitment made by the previous Liberal government on child care.

Trustee Lois Boone says the Liberal plan would have given B.C. more than 600 million dollars for child car while the Harper Government's plan gives each family just a $100 dollars a month.

Boone expressed a need for the School District to take a stand on child care, as the School District is in partnership with others in making sure children are "ready" for kindergarten.

Trustee Roxanne Ricard stood firm as she said child care is not within the School Board's mandate "I recall when we were discussing the changing of the school calendar that parents said changing spring break would mean alternate arrangements would have to be made for child care. Several of my colleagues argued that we are not responsible for babysitting, and we still are not responsible for the care of children before they come to kindergarten."

Trustee Michelle Marrelli did not support the writing of such a letter. The motion to write the letter was passed by a vote of 5-2.
