VICTORIA(CKNW/AM980) - The NDP is applauding a report by BC's
Child and Youth Officer that calls on the Campbell government to develop a
comprehensive new strategy for early childhood development.
Critic Diane Thorne says the report by Jane Morley is a call to
action and highlights the glaring inadequacies of the government's current
plan. But Thorne says the Liberals' cuts over the last four years will
make it harder to follow through with Morley's recommendations.
"A lot of people have fallen off the subsidy list because of
this, they have cut wages, subsidies for wages to childcare, they have not
come out with a plan for child care that's been called for for many years
now and most of the recommendations and funding that's gone into childcare
has been willy-nilly."
The province is expected to announce a deal with the federal
government shortly on how to spend tens of millions of dollars in new money
for early childhood development.
